Our Church High-Value Horticultural Project

The goal behind this project is to help the Centre meet its obligations towards the orphans living and accommodated at the Centre. Since local resources are scarce, and fundraising activities are long and sometimes time-consuming. It was imperative for our church to start worthwhile projects internally to sustain the Centre’s core basic needs towards children’s upkeep and maintenance, given that we are in high-potential area with a nearby market outlet for horticulture and livestock products. It so envisages that the project will form the foundation for growth and sustain ability of the Centre, and reach other needy cases.

Project objectives:

  1. Establish high-value horticultural produce at the Centre to help generate income for meeting the children’s core basic needs, and to improve the lives of people living around the Centre.
  2. To help the Centre generate income for meeting the needs of the children, and train the Centre’s children in life-saving skills using locally available resources.
  3. Establish high-value vegetables crops (tomatoes, indigenous vegetables, beans, kales, and cabbages) for income-generation.
  4. Promote environmentally-friendly organic farming/sustainable ecological farming for the growth and care of the Centre’s children.
  5. Create demonstration sites for the community's learning needs, especially concerning horticultural production for sustainability.
  6. Establish simple greenhouses for the production of some of the crops that are highly susceptible to environmental vagaries but have high-market value and fetch premium prices.
  7. Establish a simple irrigation system on the Centre’s farm to ensure continues production throughout the year.
This project is helping income-generating enterprises that create self-reliance, which is an important ingredient for sustainability.Currently, the project is not doing well because of lack of money to purchase modern equipments and tools, to pay skilled laborers, and to buy land to expand this work instead of leasing land. Since this project is intended to benefit orphans from squatter families, land-clash families, HIV victims, and those who have no land and means to survive on, it would be disheartening for Christians not to take positive action towards alleviating their misery and helping them avoid engaging in child labour, prostitution, and other vices in society. With any help we Christians can provide, many children will be saved from child labour, street life, and hopelessness
